Garden Island

Garden Island, WA (Perth South) is a military-locked island just south of Perth, and its surf is generally remote, exposed, and highly conditions-dependent. It’s not a mainstream everyday surf break; rather, it’s a stretch of coastline and surrounding reef/bank setups that can light up when southerly to southwesterly groundswell lines up with the right wind.

What the surf is like

• Wave type: Mostly reef and sandbank influenced, with waves that can range from fast and shallow to cleaner, longer-running walls depending on the exact spot and sand movement.
• Best swell: Typically S to SW swell is the main driver.
• Best wind: Often light E/NE offshore winds or very light, clean conditions.
• Exposure: Open to swell, but some areas can be shadowed or inconsistent due to the island’s shape and nearby reefs.

Conditions and quality

• When it’s working, it can offer powerful, clean waves with good shape.
• Because of the reefy nature and shifting bathymetry, conditions can be shallow, punchy, and unforgiving.
