Gas Bay

Gas Bay is a surf spot in South West Western Australia, near Margaret River on the south coast. It’s known as a fairly exposed, reef/reef-and-sand break that can produce powerful waves when a solid swell lines up.

General feel

• Location: Near Margaret River, WA
• Type: Mostly a reef break with some sand influence depending on sand movement
• Wave quality: Can be very good on the right swell, with clean, hollow sections at times
• Exposure: Takes open-ocean swell well, so it can get big and punchy

Conditions

• Best with:
• SW to S swell in the zone that lights up the south coast
• Offshore winds, often from the east or northeast
• Tide: Often works best at mid tide, though this can vary with sand and reef setup
• Swell size: Handles a range, but becomes more serious as swell builds

What to expect

• A fast, powerful wave when it’s on
• Can offer barrels/steep takeoffs on better swells
• Can also be heavy and technical, especially when larger
• Not usually a mellow beginner wave

Crowds and vibe

• Usually less famous than Main Break or other marquee Margaret River spots, but still can attract locals and traveling surfers when conditions are good
• Best approached with respect for local conditions and etiquette
