Conto springs

Conto Springs is a well-known surf break in the Margaret River region of Western Australia, south of the main Margaret River town area. It sits along a rugged stretch of coastline inside a rocky, exposed, powerful surf zone that gets plenty of SW swell from the Indian Ocean.

What it’s like

• Wave quality: Can be very good when conditions line up, with clean, punchy waves and long walls on the right swell and wind.
• Wave type: Typically a reef/rocky-bottom style break rather than an easy sandy beachie, so it can be more technical and unforgiving.
• Power: Often strong and heavy, especially when the swell is larger.
• Best conditions: Usually works best with a south to southwest swell and light offshore or northeast winds, which are common goals for Margaret River surf forecasting.
• Crowd factor: Can attract experienced locals and traveling surfers, especially when nearby breaks are either too crowded or not working.

• The spot is part of the wild, scenic South West coast, with cliffs, reefs, and nearby bushland.
• The area around Margaret River is famous for its consistent swell exposure and a mix of world-class reef breaks, beach breaks, and point-style waves.

• Like many Margaret River spots, it can be hazardous:
• shallow reef/rocky sections
• strong rips and currents
• powerful surf on bigger days
• changing conditions with tide and swell direction
