Port Geograph Bay

Port Geograph Bay is a surf break in Western Australia’s Margaret River region, on the coast north of the main Margaret River lineup. It’s part of a rugged stretch of Indian Ocean coastline known for powerful swells, cold water, and often exposed conditions.

General character

• Wave type: Open-ocean beach/reef-style break, depending on the exact sand and reef setup at the time
• Consistency: Can be very good when swell lines up, but conditions are often changeable
• Exposure: Receives plenty of southwest to west swell, with wind direction playing a big role in quality
• Crowds: Typically less crowded than the better-known Margaret River heavy-hitters, but local knowledge still matters

What it’s like

Port Geograph Bay can offer powerful, fast-moving waves with a distinctly South West WA feel: raw, strong, and occasionally heavy. On the right day, it may produce clean walls or hollow sections, but it’s not usually a mellow, beginner-friendly spot. The bay and surrounding coastline can also create current and rip issues when the swell is up.

• Tide: Varies by setup; tide can significantly affect shape and safety
