Lighthouse

Lighthouse (Margaret River North, Western Australia) is a well-known surf break on the Margaret River coast, near the famous surfer’s town of Margaret River and the Cape Naturaliste/Cape Leeuwin-style southwest coastline vibe of WA. It’s a scenic, exposed reef/point-style setup that picks up plenty of South West swell and can offer powerful, performance-oriented waves when conditions line up.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Fast, punchy, and often hollow on the better days
• Best swell: Works best with groundswells from the southwest to south-southwest
• Wind: Usually wants easterly to offshore winds for cleaner faces
• Tide: Can be tide-sensitive; mid tide is often a good place to start, but this can vary with swell size

Surf quality

• Can produce high-quality, powerful waves with a lot of energy
• Better for experienced surfers when it’s solid, as it can get heavy and challenging
• When smaller or cleaner, it may still be fun and more manageable, but it’s generally known for serious surf rather than mellow cruising
