Torquay Point

Torquay Point is a well-known surf break on Victoria’s Surf Coast, near Torquay, southwest of Melbourne. It sits in the same stretch of coastline that includes the famous Bells Beach area, and it’s part of the region often considered the gateway to the Great Ocean Road surf scene.

• Wave type: Predominantly a reef/point-style break with peeling waves.
• Best swell: Works best on consistent southerly to southwesterly swells.
• Wind: Usually prefers offshore northerly to northeasterly winds.
• Wave quality: Can produce clean, lined-up waves when conditions align, but it can also be fickle and heavily influenced by tide, swell angle, and wind.
• Crowds: Can get busy, especially when nearby breaks are poor and conditions are good.
• Skill level: Generally better suited to intermediate to advanced surfers, depending on wave size and conditions.

What to expect

Torquay Point can offer long, fun walls with sections for carving and cruising when it’s working well. On bigger swells, it can become powerful and challenging, with more current and stronger hold-down potential than it looks from shore.
