Marion Bay

Marion Bay, Tasmania (near Hobart) is a scenic, exposed surf spot on Tasmania’s southeast coast, south of Hobart. It offers a rugged, wild-ocean feel with clean water, dramatic coastline, and consistent Southern Ocean swell when conditions line up.

Surf character

• Wave type: Mostly beach and reef-break conditions depending on the exact stretch you surf
• Best swell: Southerly to southwesterly swell
• Wind: Typically best with westerly winds offshore; can get blown out quickly with strong onshore winds
• Skill level: Generally better suited to intermediate to advanced surfers, especially when swell is solid

Conditions

• Consistency: Can be very good when Southern Ocean systems send swell up the coast, but it’s not the most sheltered or forgiving spot
• Wave quality: Can produce powerful, clean waves with good shape
• Crowds: Usually less crowded than mainland spots, though local surfers may be present
• Water: Cold year-round; a proper wetsuit is essential, often a 4/3 or 5/4 in cooler months, plus boots/gloves/hood in winter

• Scenery: One of the big attractions is the pristine, remote Tasmanian setting
• Hazards: Exposed coastline, strong currents, chilly water, and changing conditions can make it challenging

• Autumn and winter: Often the best for swell and wave quality
