West Cape

West Cape, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia is a remote, exposed surf spot on the western side of the peninsula, facing the Southern Ocean. It’s known for powerful open-ocean swell and a rugged coastal setting rather than an easy, everyday wave.

What it’s like

• Exposure: Very open to SW–S swell, so it can pick up plenty of energy when there’s a good ground swell in the water.
• Wave character: Usually a fast, powerful, often hollow beachbreak/reefy setup depending on the exact sand and swell conditions.
• Wind sensitivity: Best in light winds or when offshore winds clean it up; strong onshore winds can make it rough quickly.
• Consistency: Not as reliable as more accessible breaks, but when conditions line up it can be very good.

Surfing conditions

• Best swell: South to southwest swell
• Best wind: Northerly/easterly offshore or light variable winds
• Skill level: Better suited to intermediate to advanced surfers, especially when the surf is pumping
• Hazards: Strong rips, heavy water, rocks/reef in places, and very exposed conditions
