Gull rock

Gull Rock is a surf spot on the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia, known more as a remote coastal break than a heavily developed surf destination. It sits on the exposed western side of the peninsula, where it picks up open-ocean swell from the Southern Ocean.

General character

• Wave type: typically a reef / rock break with a punchy, fast feel
• Best for: intermediate to advanced surfers, especially when conditions are clean
• Swell: works best with swell from the southwest to south
• Wind: usually wants light offshore winds from the east or northeast
• Crowds: generally light to moderate compared with mainland metro breaks

What it’s like to surf

Gull Rock can produce powerful, hollow waves when the swell and tide line up, but it can also be fickle and conditions-dependent. Because it’s exposed, the surf can get bumpy or too big quickly when the wind picks up. On the right day, it offers a solid, uncrowded South Australian session with a raw, rugged backdrop.

Conditions and hazards

• Sharp reef / rocks: care needed on entry, exit, and wipeouts
• Strong sweep / currents: can be an issue on larger swells
• Exposure: little protection from wind or swell direction changes
• Access: may require local knowledge and a bit of a mission to reach safely

Best time to go

• Autumn and winter often bring the most consistent Southern Ocean swell
• Early morning is often best for lighter winds and cleaner faces
