Flatrock

Flatrock (Eyre Peninsula, South Australia) is a rugged, exposed reef-and-beach surf spot on the west coast of SA, known for its remote feel and powerful Southern Ocean swell. It tends to be a low-key, uncrowded break compared with better-known South Australian surf locations, but conditions can be highly changeable and demand respect.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Mostly a reef/rock-led coastal break, with sections that can produce punchy, hollow waves when swell and sand/reef alignment are right.
• Swell: Best with S to SW swell wrapping in from the Southern Ocean. Larger swells can make it heavy and fast.
• Wind: Generally prefers light offshore or cross-offshore winds, often from the NE or E depending on exact orientation.
• Conditions: Can be excellent on the right tide and swell angle, but it’s not usually a forgiving beginner wave.
