Mudjimba is a mellow, beach-break surf spot on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, just north of Maroochydore and near the airport at Marcoola. It’s best known for its long sandy stretch, fairly consistent waves, and laid-back local vibe.

Surf character

  • Wave type: Beach break
  • Best for: Beginners to intermediate surfers, though it can produce fun peaks for more experienced riders on the right swell
  • Wave quality: Generally soft and manageable, with occasional hollow sections when conditions line up
  • Swell: Picks up East to Southeast swells well
  • Wind: Cleanest with light offshore westerlies or southwest winds
  • Tide: Often works across a range of tides, but many surfers prefer mid tide

What it’s like

Mudjimba usually offers relatively forgiving waves compared with more exposed reef or point breaks nearby. Because it’s a sandy beach with shifting banks, the shape can change often, so some days it’s peaky and playful, while other days it’s a bit weaker or closed out. When a decent swell hits, it can be a fun, uncrowded alternative to some of the busier Sunshine Coast breaks.

Conditions and hazards

  • Shifting sandbanks can make conditions inconsistent
  • Rips can be present, especially on bigger surf or after storms
  • Crowds are generally lighter than at the more famous nearby spots, but holiday periods can still get busy
  • Marine life: As with much of the region, be aware of sharks and other ocean hazards
  • Exposure: Can get blown out if the wind turns onshore

Nearby vibe

The area has a relaxed coastal feel, with Mudjimba Island just offshore adding a distinctive backdrop. It’s a good spot if you want a less hectic session and don’t mind a beach break that depends on sand movement and swell direction.
