Mermaid Beach, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia

Mermaid Beach is a long, open stretch of Gold Coast sand with a classic beachbreak setup. It’s generally less crowded than some of the more famous nearby breaks, and it can produce fun, peaky waves when the sand banks line up.

What it’s like

Wave type: Beachbreak
Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers on the right swell
Common vibe: Relaxed, local, and often a bit quieter than Surfers Paradise or Burleigh
Wind/swell sensitivity: Responds well to clean southerly to offshore conditions; can get choppy with onshore winds

Wave quality: Can be very good when a solid southeast swell meets well-formed banks
Wave shape: Usually short, punchy peaks rather than long walls
