Kahnies

Kahnies is a lesser-known surf spot in Sydney South, NSW. It’s generally considered a reef/point-style wave rather than a classic beachbreak, so it can offer more shape and longer lines when conditions line up.

• Wave type: Mostly a reef wave with a cleaner, more defined takeoff than nearby beachies
• Best swell: Works best on solid SSE–E swell

What it’s like to surf

When Kahnies is working, it can produce clean, workable walls with some fast sections and occasional barrels if the swell is right. On smaller swells it may not offer much, but when the banks/reef are exposed to the right angle, it can punch above its weight.

Best conditions

• Mid to high tide often helps make it more surfable and less ledgy
• Moderate to larger swell from the southeast quadrant
• Offshore or light winds
• Avoid very low tide if the reef is too exposed
