Nth Avalon

Nth Avalon (Northern Avalon), Sydney North, NSW is a beachbreak on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, tucked between Avalon and Bilgola. It’s a fairly exposed stretch of coastline that picks up plenty of swell, so it can get fun when the ocean lines up, but it also tends to be inconsistent and best suited to surfers who can read shifting sandbanks.

• Best on: S/SE swell with W/NW offshore winds
• Bottom: Sandy
• Skill level: Generally intermediate to advanced, depending on size and shape
• Crowds: Often moderate to heavy when it’s on, especially in summer and on clean days

Surf character

Nth Avalon can offer peaky, punchy waves with fast takeoffs and sections that can close out if the banks aren’t behaving. On smaller days it may be mellow and more forgiving, while on stronger swells it can become powerful and a bit unforgiving. Because the banks shift regularly, conditions can change a lot from one session to the next.

• Swell size: Small to medium is often more user-friendly; bigger swells can be heavy and messy
• Wind: Light offshore or calm is ideal
• Tide: Often works best around mid tide, but this depends on the sand
