Shatters

Shatters is a South Coast, NSW reef/breakwater-style surf spot known for being powerful, sharp, and often quite unforgiving. It’s the kind of wave that can offer quality surf when the stars line up, but it’s not usually considered a mellow or beginner-friendly option.

General feel

• Wave type: Typically a reef/rock break with a fast, hollow, and sometimes slabby character.
• Power: Can be punchy and heavy, especially on larger south swells.
• Consistency: Not the most reliable spot; it tends to come alive under the right swell direction and size.
• Crowds: Usually less crowded than more famous South Coast points, but localism can be a factor where applicable.

Best conditions

• Swell: Generally responds to southerly to south-southwest swells.
• Wind: Best in light offshore winds, often from the north to northwest depending on the exact orientation.
• Tide: Can be tide-sensitive; many reefy spots on the South Coast prefer a mid to lower tide, but this can vary.

Wave character

• Can produce clean faces, steep drops, and quick sections.
• On bigger days it may become very hollow and potentially dangerous, with plenty of water moving over shallow sections.
• On smaller days it may be more manageable, but still retains a fairly technical takeoff.

Hazards

• Reef/rocks: Expect a shallow, hard bottom.
• Rips and surge: Strong currents are common around exposed reef setups.
• Consequences: Wipeouts can be serious; this is not a soft-sand beachbreak type of wave.

Who it suits

• Intermediate to advanced surfers comfortable with reef breaks and quick takeoffs.
• Best for surfers who are confident reading swell, tide, and positioning.
• Not ideal for learners or those uncomfortable with heavier surf.
