Boneyard

Boneyard is a rocky point-and-beachbreak on the South Coast of New South Wales, near Shellharbour, just south of Wollongong. It’s a well-known, punchy local wave that can produce fast, hollow lefts and rights depending on the swell and sand movement.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Mostly a reef/rock ledge and sand influence, with a short, powerful takeoff.
• Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers when it’s on.
• Style: Quick, steep, and often shallow—more of a performance wave than a cruiser.
• Direction: Works with different swell angles, but quality depends heavily on size and period.

Conditions

• Swell: Small to medium swells can work if there’s enough punch; bigger swells can make it heavy and unruly.
• Wind: Best with light offshore or calm conditions.
• Tide: Tide can make a big difference; too low can expose hazards, too high can soften it out.
