Bombo

Bombo is a classic South Coast NSW surf spot just north of Kiama, known for its exposed beachbreak and rock-currents setup along Bombo Beach and the nearby headlands. It’s a scenic, rugged wave with a very local feel and a lot of natural beauty.

Surf character

• Wave type: Mostly a beachbreak, with some influence from nearby rocks and reefs that can shape the bank.
• Best swell: Picks up east to southeast groundswell well, and can also respond to smaller south swells depending on angle.
• Wind: Generally prefers westerly to northwesterly winds for clean conditions.
• Tide: Can change a lot with tide and sand movement; mid tides often offer the best balance, but it depends on current banks.
• Skill level: Intermediate to advanced at times, especially when it’s bigger or more powerful. On smaller days it can be more approachable.

What it’s like

• Can be fast, hollow, and punchy when the sand lines up.
• On less ideal days it can be closeout-prone or affected by sweep and uneven banks.
• The beach is open and scenic, with dramatic cliffs, basalt rock, and views toward Kiama.

Hazards / things to know

• Strong sweep and currents can be an issue.
• Watch for rocks, submerged reef patches, and changing banks.
• After big swells, the takeoff zone and sandbars can shift quickly.
• It can get crowded when conditions are good because it’s a well-known South Coast wave.
