Tuncurry Breakwall

Tuncurry Breakwall is a protected, river-mouth style surf break on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, near Forster-Tuncurry. It sits beside the breakwall at the entrance to the Wallis Lake/Forster–Tuncurry estuary system, so it’s less of an exposed open-ocean reef or beach break and more of a small, playful, variable wave spot shaped by the wall, sand, and tidal flow.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Short, fun waves that can reform and peel along the bank or wall
• Best for: Beginners to intermediates when it’s working gently; also bodyboarders and longboarders
• Size: Usually best in small to moderate surf
• Conditions: Highly dependent on sand movement, tide, and swell direction
• Vibe: Often more relaxed than nearby open beaches, but can still get crowded when conditions are good

Best conditions

• Swell: Smaller south or southeast swells often work best, but it depends on how the swell wraps in
• Wind: Light westerly/offshore winds are ideal; strong east or northeast winds can make it messy
• Tide: Mid to incoming tide is often more favorable, though this can change with sandbars and the channel

• Strong currents near the breakwall and estuary entrance
• Changing sandbars and shallow sections
• Rocks and structure close to the wall
• Boats and channel traffic in the area
• Can close out or become weak and crumbly when the swell is too big or poorly aligned
