Congo Beach – “The Suck” (Far South Coast, NSW, Australia)

Congo Beach is a exposed ocean beachbreak on the Far South Coast of New South Wales, near the village of Congo, north of Moruya. The spot is known locally as “The Suck” because of the powerful, funneling currents and the way the beachbreak can draw waves in and hollow out on the right conditions.

Can produce fast, punchy lefts and rights
On the right swell and sand setup, it can get steep and hollow

Best conditions

Swell: Works best on southerly to southeast swells, especially with a bit of size
Wind: Light offshore westerlies/northwesterlies are ideal
Tide: Often favors a mid to lower tide, though it depends on sandbars

Character

The spot can be powerful and fickle
Conditions change quickly with sand movement
When it’s on, it can be fun and intense, but it’s not usually a beginner-friendly wave

Hazards

Strong rips and sweep
Shifting sandbars
Can become heavy and shallow
Exposure to open-ocean surf means it can get significant size and power

Vibe

A relatively quiet, local stretch of coast with a more natural, uncrowded feel than many better-known NSW breaks
Best suited to surfers who are comfortable reading beachbreaks and handling stronger surf
