Lassos

Lassos is a little-known surf spot on the New South Wales Coal Coast in Australia, offering a more rugged, local-feel alternative to the better-known breaks nearby. It sits along the South Coast / Wollongong-to-Illawarra region, where surf conditions are strongly shaped by exposed coastline, reef and headland setups, and the South Pacific swell window.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Typically a reef/point-style break with a relatively punchy takeoff and a defined wall when conditions line up.
• Best swells: Usually works best on solid E/SE swell with enough size to wrap into the coast.
• Wind: Like most Coal Coast spots, it generally prefers offshore W/NW winds or very light wind.
• Bottom: Often a mix of reef and rock, so it can be technical and less forgiving than a beachbreak.
• Crowd: Often less crowded than more famous nearby spots, though that can change quickly when it’s firing.
