Headlands

Headlands (Coal Coast, NSW) is a classic South Coast surf setup known for a mix of rocky headland exposure, beachbreak energy, and shifting sandbars. It sits in a stretch of coastline that’s often influenced by southerly groundswell and can light up when swell lines wrap into the coast with enough east in them.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Usually a beachbreak / reef-assisted beachbreak depending on the exact section and sand movement.
• Best swell: Tends to work well on south to southeast swell; some east swell can also help.
• Best wind: Typically offshore west to northwest winds are best, with light mornings often being the cleanest.
• Quality: Can be very good when the banks are right, but conditions are changeable because sand movement can alter the takeoff and shape quickly.
• Wave shape: Often short, punchy, and fast, with the potential for hollow sections on better days.

Conditions and hazards

• Strong rips and currents can be an issue, especially after bigger swell.
• The area can have rocky sections and uneven bottom contours, so care is needed.
• Can get crowded when firing, especially on clean swell days.
