Acids

Acids is a well-known south coast NSW wave on the Coal Coast near Ulladulla/Manyana area, typically surfed as a powerful beachbreak/point-style setup depending on sand and swell direction. It’s one of those waves that can be very average on the wrong day and very good when the sand lines up.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Fast, punchy, often hollow sections
• Best in: Clean south to southeast swell, with light winds
• Shape: Can offer long, peeling lines on the right sand, but can also be abrupt and heavy
• Consistency: Condition-dependent — quality changes a lot with sand movement and swell angle

Surfing conditions

• Best tide: Usually mid tide, though it can handle other tides depending on bank shape
• Wind: Best with westerly/offshore winds
• Swell: Works best with south through southeast swells; too much size can make it intense and lumpy
• Crowds: Can attract locals and experienced surfers when it’s firing

Skill level

• Generally intermediate to advanced
• Can be unforgiving if you’re out of position, especially when it’s hollow or bigger

Hazards

• Rips and strong currents
• Shallow sandbanks/reef influence in places
• Heavy wipeouts when it’s on

Acids has a bit of a reputation as a quality south coast wave with bite — not always the friendliest, but rewarding when the stars line up.
