Patonga point

Patonga Point (NSW Central Coast, Australia) is a scenic, sheltered surf spot at the entrance to Patonga Creek on the Hawkesbury-facing side of the Central Coast. It’s more of a small, mellow point/rocky beach break than a heavy open-ocean surf destination, and it’s best suited to beginner to intermediate surfers on the right swell.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Short, peel-y rights/lefts depending on sand and swell direction, with a generally softer, more forgiving shape.
• Swell exposure: Prefers small to medium swells; larger swell can get messy or close out due to the sheltered nature of the spot.
• Wind: Best in light offshore or calm conditions. Strong onshores can make it bumpy quickly.
• Bottom: A mix of sand and some rock influence, so watch for shallow sections and changing contours.

Best conditions

• Smaller east or northeast swells are usually most workable.
• Incoming tide often helps smooth things out, though the ideal tide can vary with sand levels.
• Works best when other exposed beach breaks are too big or too unruly.

Crowd and vibe

• Usually a quiet, local-friendly wave rather than a crowded surf magnet.
• Good for a relaxed session, especially if you’re staying around Patonga or nearby Brisbane Water/Central Coast spots.

Things to watch

• Rocks and shallows near the point/edges.
• Tide changes can alter the wave shape a lot.
• It’s a more mellow and inconsistent wave than many classic Central Coast breaks, so timing matters.
